NOT Geniune Microsoft Product March 9, 2010 I know I'm not the first to point this out, but hopefully the more people do the lower the rating as I can't see a better way to notify Amazon of what I consider fraud.
Beware the user submitted images are for a genuine Microsoft accessory.
What is being sold here is NOT a genuine product and NOT made by Microsoft.
What is being sold here, as pictured and as received by me, is NOT a genuine accesory. This means you will not get automatic driver detection/installation, though from other reviews it sounds like you can manually install the driver every time. Not a lot of fun if you planned to use it with a notebook like I did.
I'll be investigating returning this and buying the genuine accessory elsewhere.
Didn't work, looks like a knock off March 5, 2010 You would think an Xbox 360 receiver for Windows would have some kind of Microsoft affiliation. This one doesn't. It's made by a Chinese company as far as I can tell. The drivers wouldn't install and the support CD had a Chinese name when I put it in the CD drive. It never worked for me on any of my computers, but my friend has an official Microsoft receiver which worked right away without any need for drivers. Eventually I just bought myself Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows (which comes with the receiver my friend has) even though I already had 4 controllers.
In the end it wasn't really worth it. Most of my games don't support the controller anyways and the ones that do are easier to play with a keyboard and mouse (for me at least).
Buyer Beware!! This product is *NOT* by Microsoft as Advertised!!! February 27, 2010 Buyer Beware!! This product is *NOT* by Microsoft as Advertised!!!
I purchased this item because my original Microsoft receiver stopped working after the manufacture's warranty time of 90 days. The device simply was not working one morning. So I searched online for e replacement and though I was getting the original Microsoft Xbox 360 receiver because it was advertised that way. Unfortunately the product did not work right off so i had to contact Microsoft gaming for support. Then after trial and error we discovered that Microsoft did not produce this rip off of their product.
So how can I prove this? Well first off the pic #2 and #3 are are legit. but the 1st pic if the rip off. Microsoft NEVER prints the Words "Xbox 360" without first printing "Microsoft" to read "Microsoft Xbox 360." Behind the word Microsoft there will be a 'R' in a circle and behind the words Xbox 360 will be a small 'TM.' This product came with a receiver and packaging that looks VERY similar to the real one but it is not.
So that's the bad news, but their is good news too........
The good news is, that it does still work. Unfortunately not as simply as the real one. They send the receiver with a driver disk that doesn't work with all OS. The work around is to use you common driver by Microsoft already installed on your Windows or Vista Disk Drivers area and install the driver manually. unfortunately this also means you have to reinstall the driver each time you unplug it.
Go to: Start Menu and open Control panel
Then open 'Hardware and Sound' from control panel for Windows users for vista users select 'Additional options' then from the left hand side open 'Hardware and Sound'.
Then open Device Manager for windows or Vista
Then click on the "Unknown Driver"
Then click on search for additional options and manually install the driver yourself
Then select the 'Microsoft Common Controller for Windows class'
Then it will give a list of drivers for you...... pick the one from Feb of 2007 and install that one.
Then you are good to go and able to play the games you want using your Xbox360 controller.
Flawless once you get it working February 6, 2010 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a very handy device and well worth your money as ou favorite games can now be played with the comfort of the Xbox 360 controller.
A word of advice though, if you have Windows 7, getting this device to work is very tricky. When i got it, everytime I plug it in Windows 7 attempts to find a driver (online search also), fails and then says 'Failed to install un-recognised device' something similar, and it remains an 'Unrecognised Device' under Control Panel. If this happens to you even if you install the drivers, you have to do the following: Plug it in, go to Device Manager and it should come up as "Unknown Device" or something similar. Right click on it, go to 'Update Driver Software' then select 'Browse for driver software on your computer' then select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer', scroll down and select 'Microsoft Common Controller For Windows Class' and hit Next, then select 'Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows' (if there are more then one, select the most latest) and hit Next. I did all of this on my Windows 7 32bit after installing the drivers and no more 'Uknown Device' business, works perfectly now.
Why put out such a failure prone product??? January 30, 2010 These transceivers are crap, shame I didn't learn about it until after I picked one up but these things have been failure prone for years. The power draw is high and users have had USB devices that were plugged in simultaneously fail (actual device failure, just just plug back in failure), and even if it doesn't kill other devices, the receiver is prone to fail itself. There was a link on Engadget years ago describing these issues and user feedback.
[...]
The problem with the receivers themselves is that the power draw is so high the F1 fuse on the unit is blowing (which could opentially kill underpowered USB devices on same computer). It can be opened up and hacked manually, but why should you have to do that? Now you've got a device which takes too much power, and exceeds the operating limits that even MS defined.
Oh - and product only warrantied for 90 days, nevermind that the receiver doesn't get the wear and tear that the controller would. Dissapointing, bad design that's sure to fail after long enough, and I would not recommend.
