Switched to Logitech G500 August 27, 2010 The X8 was my first wireless mouse but probably my 4th or 5th "performance-type" mouse. I tried to use it for a few months but ultimately gave up and switched to a Logitech G500 wired mouse. I am much happier.
My biggest complaints are as follows in order of importance: - Mouse would miss clicks maybe one in fifty times. Really annoying on web pages, for example, where I wouldn't notice the missed click right away thinking it was slow web-site response. - Heavy interference between the mouse and my wireless-N router and laptop. Transmitting a file using wireless-N would slow the mouse to the point that it wasn't usable during the file transfer. Narrowing the N bandwidth and changing router channels made very little difference. I have read at least one review that mentions poor compatibility with routers with a mention of a possible software/firmware fix from Microsoft but I could find no such patch/update. - Pretty crappy wheel on the X8. Very stiff and I needed to almost partially press the mouse wheel to turn the wheel. Very funky feel to it. It seemed to loosen up a bit after a couple of months but was still irritating to use. The G500 mouse wheel is heaven compared to the X8. The G500 mouse wheel can even be changed on the fly between ratchet and free-spin mouse wheel usage. - I found the audible clicks of the X8 mouse buttons to be more noticeable/annoying than other mice I have used. - Battery level indicator didn't seem too useful to me. Unless I was doing something wrong, it only showed full charge or low-battery - nothing in between. Also only showed battery level when connected to the charging wire, which seems kind of too late/superfluous to me.
The other features of the X8 seemed to be OK, including the selectable DPI, but the above complaints ended up being deal-breakers for me.
Laggy August 14, 2010 Got this mouse new to replace a X5 that died. Thought it would be better for gaming and similar to the X5 that I really liked. The mouse is designed differently, the case has a separate top with a lip where it meets the bottom case that numbs my pinky finger. On the other hand, I really like the removable feet, makes it easier to clean.
I use the mouse plugged in with the tether rather than straight wireless. response has been problematic, though. In general use, it often takes several clicks to hit the right mark to make the page open or the button to work. Also, in game, it often doesn't register a mouse click the first time. I play COD4, COD5/WAW and BFBC2. Has same problem in every game. This can quickly interfere with game play and has become annoying. Will look to get a new X5 to replace this one as it isn't worth the effort to continue using it.
Sidewinder X8. A Good Effort From Microsoft July 20, 2010 I like the look and feel of this product and unlike some customer and editorial reviews, I actually prefer the arrangement of the side buttons. The macro button is far removed as it should be and the vertical arrangement of the two programmables are just right for me. Very easy to select and much bettor than the usual horizontal configuration.
It has good to excellent battery life and I like the combo 'mouse feet' storage, charger and cord storage module. It's not only utilitarian but....cool.
With my large hands I would actually like more height built in to the body of the mouse but it is large as mice go and has good length.
The wheel is not entirely to my liking. I would prefer it further to the front and with a smooth movement as opposed the the 'ratcheted' feel it has now.
The button dedicated to opening the games folder in Win 7 really should be programmable.
Microsoft is too often an easy and inviting target but all in all, this effort is a very nice product.
Awesome mouse...horrid battery life July 2, 2010 The mouse does everything I wanted it to. I love the button layout and the way it feels in my hand. I have medium sized hands and I could see where this mouse wouldn't be ideal for someone for small hands. The battery life on the other hand is atrocious. Granted this may be the rechargeable that I am using(Energizer) but this mouse can kill a fully charged battery in a week at 4k DPI. I do a lot of gaming so this figures into it. I also have a Microsoft Arc Mouse and the battery last close to two months and I had been using it just as much before I got this mouse.
Review June 30, 2010 Pros: Programable on a per program basis DPI Buttons Shape Cons: Hard to lift into the air Reciever is huge Scrowl wheal
